Course Outline

Welcome to the 2012-13 school year, Class of 2016. For Freshman English, we will focus on the following goals for the year:
1. College and Career Ready Anchor Standards: Informational Texts

• Determine central ideas and analyze development
• Determine emergence and shape as defined by specific details
• Provide an objective summary of text - devoid of emotional bias

2. Text-based evidence for answers and arguments
3. Responding to reading through writing
4. Building academic vocabulary and understanding its usage
5. Analysis of FICTION and NON-FICTION sources (approximately 40% fiction/60% informational)
6. Building up research methods and term paper using the MLA format

Freshman level will include texts from great masters such as Steinbeck, Twain, Shakespeare, as well as stories from Greek Mythology, including writers such as Homer and Apollodorus.
